An initiative linked to FEMA and AmeriCorps is looking for volunteers to take part in a service program that allows them to travel to different parts of the United States while helping with emergency management and disaster response.
This is FEMA Corps, which lasts 10 months and is aimed at young adults who want to gain full-time work experience in this field.
One by one: the tasks volunteers would have to perform in exchange for housing and food
This collaboration between the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the AmeriCorps NCCC volunteer service program seeks participants to join teams to travel to different regions of the country and support activities related to
- Emergency management
- Operations coordination
- Mission planning
- Disaster response and recovery
- Administrative and logistical tasks
These are the confirmed benefits offered to all volunteers
Those selected for this program will receive benefits such as
- Free community housing
- Program-covered meals
- Limited health coverage
- Transportation and travel related to service
- Professional and technical training
- A stipend for personal expenses
In addition, all necessary travel for the program will be covered, including arrival at the training site, transfers between projects, and the return home at the end of service.
Volunteers receive a financial benefit when the program ends
Upon completing the service period, access is granted to the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, whose current benefit exceeds $7,300 and can be used for
- Future studies
- Educational tuition
- Repayment of qualified student loans
It is also explained that participants could gain access to a network of employers and educational programs connected to AmeriCorps.
Requirements the program demands in order to participate
To apply, several requirements must be met. Some of the main ones are
- Be between 18 and 24 years old
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be available to serve for 10 or 11 months full time
- Pass an initial drug screening test
- Be willing to travel frequently across the country
Those who wish to serve as team leaders must also have a valid driver’s license.
This is how a volunteer can sign up
Applications are submitted through the MyAmeriCorps portal and the process consists of
- Search for the available opportunity
- Create a personal profile
- Complete the application
- Submit professional references
- Send the application for review
Until September 30 of this year, for example, a team leader is being sought to begin the course in January 2027.
