Texas drivers who have an expired driver’s license should pay close attention to the deadlines set by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
In August 2026, for example, all driver’s licenses that expired before August 2024 and were not renewed have already been permanently suspended and cannot be updated through the usual process.
Why licenses that were not updated after August 2024 will be suspended
The DPS rule states that a driver’s license or identification card can be renewed for up to two years after its expiration date.
Once that period has passed, the document is no longer eligible for renewal and it is necessary to start the process from scratch, as if the document had never been issued in the first place.
Licenses permanently suspended in August 2026
Using the current date as a reference, Texas licenses that expired before August 2024 have already exceeded the two-year limit, and if they were not renewed, they automatically became invalid for updating.
This should be considered for any other license that expired in September, October, November, or December 2024, since there is little time left to bring it up to date through renewal.
What people who let their driver’s license expire should do
Those who have a document that has been expired for more than two years must apply for a new Texas driver’s license and meet the following requirements
- Complete the corresponding application
- Present proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, as applicable
- Present proof of identity
- Provide biometric information, such as a signature and fingerprints
- Have a photograph taken
- Pay the fee
- Pass a vision test
