The assistance is intended for a small group of families in Howard County, a jurisdiction located in Maryland that decided to move forward with this pilot program together with local community organizations.
At this stage, the benefit reaches only 20 households, selected from among hundreds of applicants. The main requirements included:
- reside within Howard County;
- have at least one child under 18 years old;
- meet certain income limits;
- have participated in social or community programs related to housing, energy, or child care.
The goal, authorities explained, is to prevent vulnerable families from falling into a deeper financial crisis.

That means each family can freely decide how to use it according to their most urgent needs. The most common uses include:

Can this aid still be applied for in Maryland?
For now, no. The registration process has already closed, and authorities confirmed that there are no new slots available for this edition of the program.
However, the county will analyze the results of the plan during 2026 to determine whether to extend the initiative or add new beneficiaries in the future.
