Elon Musk has opened a new hiring push tied to the development of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Through SpaceX, the billionaire is looking for engineers, electricians, plumbers, technicians and skilled construction workers to take part in projects involving data centers and supercomputing infrastructure.

Musk announced the hiring effort in early August 2026, seeking workers capable of helping build and operate large supercomputer clusters for his artificial intelligence projects. The positions include technical and infrastructure jobs, particularly those connected to data center facilities.

What workers is SpaceX looking for?

The company is not only looking for professionals who work directly with software or artificial intelligence. The hiring effort also includes skilled tradespeople needed to build and maintain the physical infrastructure required by these systems.

The positions mentioned in the hiring effort include:

  • engineers in several specialties;
  • electricians;
  • plumbers;
  • skilled technicians;
  • construction workers;
  • data center infrastructure and operations specialists.

The official xAI careers page currently lists positions such as Electrician (Construction), data center operations technicians, maintenance technicians, electrical and mechanical construction supervisors, electrical and mechanical engineers, and other infrastructure-related jobs. Many of these openings are based in Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi.

What are the requirements to apply?

Musk’s hiring process is aimed at identifying candidates with relevant experience and demonstrable skills.

In a post on X, he said applicants should submit their resume along with three points demonstrating exceptional ability. Candidates are expected to explain their most important achievements and relevant experience in a concise way.

According to Musk’s hiring announcement, interested workers can send their information to datacenters@spacex.com.

People interested in the broader range of opportunities can also visit xAI’s official careers page, where numerous openings related to data center construction and operations are currently listed.

Where are the jobs located?

The available opportunities are spread across several positions and locations rather than being concentrated in a single job or city.

The main hiring locations currently include Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi, where the company is recruiting workers for infrastructure, construction and operations. Some other data center-related positions are also available in locations such as Hillsboro, Oregon.

Current openings include electrical and mechanical construction jobs, construction supervision, engineering, facilities operations, power generation, maintenance, fiber optics and data center operations.

The range of positions shows that the hiring push goes far beyond traditional technology jobs and requires workers capable of handling the physical infrastructure behind large-scale AI systems.

Why is Musk hiring skilled tradespeople?

Artificial intelligence systems require enormous amounts of computing power, electricity and cooling, making data centers a critical part of the industry’s expansion.

SpaceX and xAI already have supercomputing infrastructure in Memphis, where Colossus operates as part of the company’s AI efforts and is used to train Grok models. Expanding these systems requires new buildings, electrical systems, mechanical equipment, networks and specialized workers to keep the facilities running.

As a result, the growth of artificial intelligence is also creating demand for professionals who are not traditionally associated with Silicon Valley, including electricians, technicians and construction workers.

Musk’s project also looks beyond Earth

Musk’s hiring announcement includes an unusual detail: his vision is not limited to data centers located on Earth.

His post called for building and operating supercomputer clusters “on & off Earth,” suggesting a long-term ambition to develop AI infrastructure both on the planet and eventually in space.

That does not mean the workers currently being hired will be sent into space. The available positions are associated with facilities on Earth and involve specific construction, engineering and data center operations work.

However, the statement highlights Musk’s broader vision for the future of AI infrastructure and its potential connection to SpaceX’s space capabilities.
