In the United States, airlines are authorized to deny boarding to all citizens and foreign nationals whose passport does not meet one of the conditions to be considered valid.
According to the warning from the State Department, institutions can reject all passports that do not meet the destination country’s requirements, such as having enough blank pages available for visas and immigration stamps.
The United States authorizes airlines to reject all passports that do not meet this requirement: How must this document be presented?
The State Department warns: “In addition to checking your passport expiration date, make sure you have enough blank pages to travel”.
This is important because pages are needed for visas, immigration stamps, and other checks to be placed. However, requirements vary by destination, and there may be other reasons that allow airlines to reject the document.

Renewing a passport: How do you know when it is necessary?
The United States passport must be renewed for several possible reasons. First, if for the planned trip the passport will have less than six months of validity remaining, and that is another reason why boarding could be denied. Also:
- It does not have enough pages.
- It is damaged, torn, or stained.
- It has expired.
- The name was changed and the details do not match those on the ticket.
However, not everyone can access this process, since the following are required:
- To have a passport with an original validity of ten years.
- To be 25 years old or older.
- Not to change personal information, such as name or sex.
- Not to plan to travel for at least six weeks after submitting the application.
- To reside in a U.S. state or territory.
- To keep the current passport and for it not to be damaged or reported lost or stolen.
What happens to those who cannot renew the passport?
People who cannot renew the passport must apply for a new one with Form DS-11 instead of Form DS-82 as the traditional process implies.
The following cannot access it:
- Minors under 16 years old.
- People whose passport was issued more than 15 years ago.
- People with a damaged or lost passport.
