According to the U.S. federal holiday calendar, Monday, September 7, 2026, is Labor Day. Because it is a federal holiday, many government agencies and public institutions will be closed.
While most countries celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1 for historical and symbolic reasons, the United States observes Labor Day on the first Monday of September each year, with parades, celebrations, and special events held across the country.
The Government declared a holiday: What is being celebrated on Monday, September 7?
The origin of Labor Day dates back to September 5, 1882, when the Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor organized a parade in the city of New York to honor workers.
The celebration was inspired by a similar event held in Toronto, Canada. After the success of that first edition, in 1884 the organization decided to turn it into an annual celebration.

Although other labor movements preferred to establish Labor Day on May 1, in commemoration of the start of the protests for the eight-hour workday, then President Grover Cleveland considered that date could encourage unrest and social conflict. For that reason, he supported the Knights of Labor proposal to keep the celebration in September.
There will be a new long weekend: Schools, banks, and government offices will close
Because it is a federal holiday, government offices, the postal service, banks, and many schools will remain closed. In addition, in different parts of the country, parades, barbecues, sporting events, and family gatherings are held to commemorate the date.
Labor Day also marks, unofficially, the end of summer in the United States and the return to school in many regions of the country.
