The city of New York announced a major change in traffic that will directly affect the rules that drivers must follow.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that a bus-only lane will be created in the Queens district as part of the urban preparations that will be carried out ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
This new lane will be intended only for public transportation, so no private driver will be allowed to use it. The goal is to improve travel times to the airport and reduce congestion in one of the busiest areas of the district.
Confirmed by Mamdani: this is how traffic on New York streets will now be
This is a project by the city’s Department of Transportation that seeks to create a bus-only lane on Broadway, specifically along the stretch between 69th Street and Roosevelt Avenue, in Queens.
The new infrastructure will consist of
- A bus-only lane heading east located in the center of the avenue
- A general traffic lane in each direction for the rest of the vehicles
This means that the new lane will be reserved only for public transportation, so no driver will be able to use it to travel through.

Which drivers will use this new New York lane
According to the authorities, the lane will be mainly intended for Q70-SBS service drivers, a line that connects the Queens area with LaGuardia Airport.
It is estimated that approximately 9,000 people use this transport daily, including both travelers and airport workers and residents.
In addition, it is a bus whose route allows connections with other means of transportation such as
- The 7 subway line
- The E, F, M and R lines
- The Long Island Rail Road
- Several local bus routes
As indicated, the goal is to facilitate access to the airport and improve mobility in one of the most congested corridors.
When could this new traffic arrangement on New York streets go into effect
Before final implementation, the plan will be presented to the local community board for evaluation.
If it proceeds as planned, the complete installation of the new lane is expected to be completed before the World Cup matches begin in June.
When the measure goes into effect, drivers will have to respect this exclusive lane and adjust their traffic in accordance with the new rule.
