The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has set new mandatory conditions for all drivers who need to register or renew their vehicle registration. The measure is part of a key update to identity checks in the state.
The authorities reported that the change directly modifies the requirements applicants must meet, especially regarding valid documentation.
Texas confirmed it: without valid identification, registration cannot be renewed
The Texas DMV now requires all drivers to present an official photo ID, valid and unexpired in order to register or renew a vehicle.
This means that documents that were previously accepted, such as licenses or passports that had expired within a certain time frame, will no longer be valid under the new rules.

Accepted documents include valid driver’s licenses, passports, military IDs, or documents issued by federal agencies.
If the applicant does not present valid identification at the time of the process, they will not be able to complete the registration renewal, leaving the vehicle without legal authorization to circulate.
Important information to keep in mind
The new rules began to be implemented in 2026 and are part of a broader tightening of controls in the vehicle registration system in Texas.
The main goal of the measure is to ensure the validity of applicants’ identities and strengthen safety standards in the state’s administrative processes.
In addition, the regulation removes previous flexibilities, which directly affects those who do not have their documentation updated when they begin the process.
Other key changes in Texas’s vehicle registration system
Authorities also indicated that this requirement will be applied progressively to all procedures related to vehicle registration, including new registrations and renewals.
In the first stage, the requirement is already in force for initial registrations, while for renewals it will be fully mandatory starting in 2027.
In this way, the DMV is moving toward a stricter system in terms of identification, which requires drivers to keep their documentation current in order to legally drive in the state.
