An archaeologists team discovered an ancient Celtic settlement filled with valuable objects, including gold coins and silver, jewelry, ceramic fragments, and amber pieces.

The find occurred in the Bohemia region, in what is now the Czech Republic, during excavations carried out along the route of a highway that will be built in the area.

The archaeological site was identified near the city of Hradec Králové and, according to the researchers, it is one of the most important discoveries recorded in the country in recent years because of the quantity and diversity of objects found.

The work was carried out by specialists from the East Bohemia Museum, the University of Hradec Králové, and the archaeological research company Archaia Praha.

A Celtic treasure that remained hidden for centuries

The researchers determined that the settlement was established around the 4th century BC and reached its peak activity during the 2nd century BC.

The site covers approximately 62 acres and is associated with the La Tene period, a stage of the Late Iron Age historically linked to Celtic peoples.

What was found during the installations

  • House foundations
  • Production facilities
  • Possible shrines
  • Ceramic fragments
  • Jewelry and ornaments
  • Gold and silver coins
  • Amber objects
  • Brooches and metal belt components
  • Glass beads and bracelets

History behind this discovery: what the experts say

The specialists believe the settlement functioned as a regional center of trade and production since the site was not fortified against attacks, which was common for items sent to other regions through trade routes.

Among the materials found there are also fragments of amber, a highly valued element in antiquity for making jewelry.

One of the country’s greatest archaeological finds

According to the researchers, the site contains tens of thousands of artifacts and constitutes one of the largest collections of archaeological objects discovered in the Czech Republic.

The number of finds is explained, in part, because the settlement was not altered by agricultural activity or treasure hunters, which allowed much of the original material to be preserved.
