The technique consists of cutting several layers of aluminum foil with the scissors to help smooth out small irregularities in the edge and temporarily improve its cutting ability. Although it does not replace professional sharpening, it can be useful as a maintenance method when wear is slight.

This method is mainly used to recover part of the sharpness of scissors that have started to cut with difficulty. By making several cuts on folded aluminum foil, the contact between both metals can reduce small burrs and surface imperfections present on the blades.
In this way, it can be useful for:
- Temporarily improving cutting precision.
- Smoothing small irregularities in the edge.
- Making it easier to cut paper, fabric or threads when wear is slight.
- Performing quick maintenance before resorting to specific sharpening.
In what cases does it lose effectiveness?
If the scissors are very worn, rusted, nicked or misaligned, the aluminum will not solve the problem and they will need to be sharpened properly or replaced.

How to do it correctly and without damaging the scissors?
To apply the trick safely:
- Cut a piece of aluminum foil approximately 30 centimeters.
- Fold it several times until you get a strip of about 4 to 6 layers.
- Open the scissors fully and make long cuts over the foil, trying to use the entire blade, from the area near the screw to the tip.
- Repeat approximately 10 to 15 times, without applying excessive force.
- Then clean the blades with a cloth to remove any small residue.
- Test the scissors on a sheet of paper to check whether the cutting improved.
Why do they recommend cutting sheets of aluminum foil with scissors?
This is an economical, simple and accessible method for carrying out superficial maintenance of the edge. By cutting several layers, friction is generated between the aluminum and the edge of the blades, which can help remove small burrs and improve the contact between both blades.
Therefore, rather than considering that aluminum completely “sharpens” a blunt pair of scissors, it is more accurate to understand it as a resource to polish and temporarily improve a slightly worn edge.
