Virginia state authorities insist on legislation that has been in effect for more than 10 years and that directly affects the validity of driver’s licenses for drivers over 75 years old.

The regulation aims to tighten the protocols of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the state when approving this document for senior citizens.

It is official: the Government suspends driver’s licenses for those over 75

The driver’s license is one of the most important documents in the United States, since it not only allows legal driving, but is also used as a document to verify identity.

However, Virginia authorities tightened the license renewal process for all those over 75. According to the legislation in effect since 2014, these residents must begin this process in person at DMV offices.

In other words, these drivers can no longer complete this process through the online platform. Authorities require them to undergo rigorous tests and assess their abilities.

Those who will not be able to continue driving are:

  • Fail the vision test.
  • Do not submit an eye statement that is no more than 90 days old.

How often must these drivers renew their license?

Although there are a series of federal regulations regarding the driver’s license, DMV agents in each state also have influence over this document.

After the reduction, from 80 to 75 years old, for online license renewal, the document validity periods were also modified. For the average resident, the validity period is 8 years, but for senior residents it is 5 years.
