Passport validity is one of the first points that those planning to travel should check.

However, the conditions are not identical in the United States, Mexico, and Spain: each government sets its own requirements on how long the document must remain valid and what features it must meet.

People who decide to enter one of these three countries must also check whether the destination requires additional months of passport validity.

The United States: when a passport may not be enough

In the United States, requirements depend on the traveler’s nationality, the purpose of the trip, and the document used for entry.

The State Department warns that some destinations require at least six additional months of validity after the planned travel dates and that some airlines may deny boarding if the passenger does not meet that requirement.

For those traveling under the Visa Waiver Program, for example, a passport with certain characteristics is required and, in general, validity of at least six months beyond the planned departure from the United States, except for the exceptions established through specific agreements with certain countries.

In turn, foreign citizens who are in the United States must have a valid passport in order to leave the country and later enter another state, according to State Department information.

Mexico also requires a valid and current passport

Mexico expressly states that foreigners who wish to enter the country must have a current and valid passport.

The National Migration Institute notes that, for entry, the person must present a passport or a current identity and travel document that is valid under international law.

A current residence or visitor card may also be required, depending on the person’s immigration status.

Therefore, a person who discovers that their document has expired before traveling should renew it before heading to the airport or border crossing, unless there is a specific exception that applies to their case.

Spain applies a stricter rule: three additional months of validity

In Spain, the condition can be even more demanding for citizens of third countries entering the territory.

The Ministry of the Interior states that the foreign person must present a valid and current passport or travel document.

The document must have a minimum validity of three months after the planned date of departure from the territory of the member states and must have been issued within the previous ten years before the date of entry.

Spanish regulations also provide for other requirements, such as presenting a visa when applicable and documentation that justifies the purpose and conditions of the stay.

What travelers should check before boarding the plane

Traveling with a valid passport is essential to avoid problems at immigration controls in the United States, Mexico, and Spain.

Each country sets its own requirements regarding the document’s validity, so it is recommended to check the conditions before traveling and renew the passport well in advance if it is about to expire.
