The United States government announced through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that flights to Haiti will not be allowed until after midyear, as a preventive measure against attacks on aircraft.

Likewise, cruise ships departing from the North American country are also avoiding Haitian territory: both Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean canceled their corresponding operations in nearby areas.

The United States bans all incoming flights to this country: until when

The government has restricted travel to Haiti until at least September 3. This measure prevents aircraft from operating below 3,048 meters in altitude over Haiti, according to the FAA.

The reason is aviation safety, taking into account the background of the Spirit Airlines flight incidentSpirit Airlines that was hit by gunfire in November 2024, resulting in one crew member being injured.

The measure affects all aviators, both commercial and civilian, with an FAA certificate, except for aircraft registered in the United States that operate with foreign airlines.

Why does the United States not allow aircraft bound for this Latin American country to depart?

According to an FAA report, several Haitian foreign terrorist organizations opened fire on various occasions since September 2025 against aircraft within the area where civil aviation operations are not permitted in the United States.

Haiti’s travel advisory is at level 4, the highest rating, so Americans are advised not to travel to this destination. According to the Department of State, the classification is due to the risk of crime, terrorism, kidnapping, unrest, and poor medical care.

The aid program recommended by U.S. authorities

Regardless of the destination chosen, the Department of State advises those traveling abroad to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). It is a free service that provides updated information and alerts about different countries.

In addition, this system allows authorities to communicate more quickly and directly with U.S. citizens in emergency situations, making consular assistance easier when needed.
