The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) details on its official website the conditions under which its tax officials may carry out home visits to a taxpayer to verify timely compliance with their tax obligations.

If this measure must be carried out, the agency will contact the taxpayer to inform them of the action and arrange a meeting. However, if no response is received to the communications, the agency has the authority to proceed with the visit to the home —or business— without fail.

The IRS will deploy officials door to door to verify compliance with tax obligations

According to the agency, revenue officers are civil employees who are directly involved in the tax collection process for taxpayers.

When the IRS decides to carry out these visits, it informs taxpayers of their rights and the consequences of keeping outstanding tax obligations.

“It is noted that the agent sends Letter 725-B or contacts you by phone to coordinate a visit. To confirm the appointment, it is necessary to call the phone number listed in the letter.”

If no response is received, repeated notices will be sent; however, if the lack of communication continues, the visit will take place anyway.

What happens when the IRS visits your home to verify tax compliance

In this procedure, agents conduct a thorough review of returns and outstanding taxes, offering the possibility of making the payment to the official on the spot. Likewise, the option of carrying out the transaction online will be offered.

How to verify whether the agent visiting my home works for the IRS

The agency indicates that, if an IRS agent makes an unannounced visit, the taxpayer has the authority to use the Employee Verification Tool to confirm the authenticity of the individual presenting themselves as a representative of the agency.

This tool allows the taxpayer to verify the employee’s legitimacy, thus ensuring that the visit comes from an official employee.
